Enhanced On-line Resources Improve Patient Experience

There’s no doubt that technology has had a lasting impact on almost every aspect of our daily lives. Healthcare is no different. For many, access to their online medical records has helped them track results and communicate with their care provider. In fact, according to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, more than eight in 10 individuals found that online medical records were easy to understand and useful for monitoring their health.

John Muir Health recently made important investments in technology that will make it easier to manage your healthcare online. Two examples are the transition from MyJohnMuirHealth to the MyChart patient portal, and improvements to the Find a Doctor provider directory on our website.

MyChart is a secure online portal where you can view and manage your medical information whenever it's most convenient for you. Features include:

  • Schedule appointments online with your doctor and urgent care
  • Message your care team
  • View lab results
  • Pay your bill online with e-check or credit card
  • Get on a wait list for earlier appointment times
  • Check-in early by completing forms and paying your co-pay online
  • Share your medical record with different doctors and health systems
  • And more...

The Find a Doctor function as been available on our website since 2011. Recent updates, done at the request of both patients and clinicians, include important new capabilities like smarter sorting of the directory, the ability to see all doctors that work in the same practice, and the ability to display office hours. The features make online scheduling easy to do even in today’s busy world. And, these capabilities are as easy to access on a mobile device as they are from a desktop.

Phoebe is a strong souled, optimistic woman with a very long health journey. She suffered from undiagnosed childhood diabetes that almost killed her. It eventually lead to partial blindness that has progressed over the years to a complete loss of sight. As a health system, we think carefully about how the technology we put in place makes life easier for our patients. That can be a complicated process when someone can’t scan a computer screen for the visual clues on how to navigate an app or a portal. Phoebe recently spent about four hours with John Muir Health showing them how she uses the voice function on her cell phone to access her online medical records.

“We are learning new and better ways to improve the patient experience and the critical support patients need by listening to all of her insightful feedback,” said Daniela Penati, senior user experience designer. “Her open discussion, humor, charm, and thoughtful critique will help other blind or sight impaired people easily navigate their health information and doctor communications.”

We sincerely thank Phoebe for taking the time to guide us through this important process.
