Vaccine Booster Shots

Updated April 04, 2022

Who is eligible for COVID-19 vaccine booster shots?

The CDC’s latest recommendation can be found here.

Is John Muir Health giving COVID-19 vaccine booster shots to everyone eligible?

As of March 29, we are currently giving first booster shots to anyone who is a John Muir Health patient and eligible. The CDC has recently updated its recommendations to allow certain immunocompromised individuals and people over the age of 50 who received an initial booster dose at least 4 months ago to be eligible for another mRNA booster to increase their protection against severe disease from COVID-19.

We will begin offering additional booster shots to these groups in mid-April.

Please note that there are many other places offering vaccines. If you are not able to schedule with us at a time that’s convenient for you, we encourage you to go to one of the local, county or state locations to receive a booster shot.

Please note that we are only offering Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines. If you would prefer to receive a Moderna COVID-19 booster shot, we encourage you to go to one of the local, county or state locations. We appreciate your understanding.

How do I schedule a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot appointment?

You may schedule your vaccine booster shot appointment in MyChart.

If you have a MyChart account, simply log in and go to Visits, then click “Schedule an Appointment”. From there, choose “COVID-19 Vaccine” and you can schedule a vaccine booster appointment at any of our convenient vaccine clinic locations.

If you are a current John Muir Health patient and don’t have a MyChart account yet, you can set up a MyChart account. After your account is set up, follow the instructions above to schedule a vaccine appointment. There is no cost to set up a MyChart account.

If you are having any trouble setting up your MyChart account, read our MyChart FAQ or call our Patient Support Center at (925) 941-2001, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please note that our Patient Support Center is for MyChart technical issues only and the team is not able to schedule patient appointments.

Do I need to bring anything to my booster shot appointment?

Yes. You must bring your CDC COVID-19 vaccination card. We cannot give you a booster shot without this card. Thank you for remembering to bring it!

If you have lost your vaccination card and were vaccinated at John Muir Health previously, we can make you a new card. Please send your doctor a message in MyChart requesting a new card. We can then mail you a new card, you may pick up your new card prior to your booster shot appointment or we can make you a new card when you arrive to your appointment.

Can I get a COVID-19 booster shot at John Muir Health if I meet the criteria but I didn’t get my first COVID-19 vaccine series at John Muir Health?

Yes. Please note that if you are in the immunocompromised group, you must have received the Pfizer COVID-19 booster for your first vaccine series, as mixing and matching vaccines is not recommended for people who are immunocompromised.

Please note that we are only offering Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines. If you would prefer to receive a Moderna COVID-19 booster shot, we encourage you to go to one of the local, county or state locations. We appreciate your understanding.

Can I get a COVID-19 booster shot at John Muir Health if I meet the criteria but I got the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine previously?

Yes. The FDA has amended the Emergency Use Authorization to allow for booster shots of the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines and to allow for “mixing and matching” of vaccines, which means that someone who has previously received a full series of one of the vaccines (for example, Moderna) can receive a booster shot of a different vaccine (for example, Pfizer or Johnson & Johnson).

We offer the Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines at John Muir Health. If you would like to receive a Moderna vaccine booster, we recommend contacting the location where you received the first series of Moderna vaccine shots to find out if they are offering booster shots. We appreciate your understanding.

Please note that we are only able to provide booster shots to immunocompromised people who have previously received the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, as the CDC does not recommend mixing and matching vaccines for immunocompromised people. For more information for immunocompromised people who had previously received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, please see the CDC’s website.

If I received my first two doses of the vaccine at John Muir Health and I am eligible for a booster shot, can I get the booster shot at another location?

Yes. It is most important to us that you get the booster shot if you meet the CDC’s criteria. There are many locations offering the booster shot in our community. Please remember that if you are immunocompromised, you must get the same type of vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) that you got for your first two vaccine shots.
