Advanced diagnostic tools allow us to quickly and accurately diagnose and stage colorectal cancer.
Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) – John Muir Health has been performing this procedure for 15 years to accurately stage colon and rectal cancers. In this procedure, the physician inserts an ultrasound probe through the anus in order to obtain images inside the rectum and colon and determine exactly how deeply the cancer has penetrated.
Pelvic Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) — This noninvasive imaging technique is another effective technique for accurately staging rectal cancers.
Computed Tomography (CT) Scan — A computer-enhanced X-ray especially useful for detecting smaller tumors, enlarged lymph nodes, or metastases to other parts of the body.
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan — This non-invasive procedure may be used in conjunction with a CT scan and helps us track any abnormal metabolic activity within the body.
