Elective

In family medicine, no two careers look the same—and we believe your training shouldn't either. Our elective curriculum is built to honor the diverse scopes of practice within family medicine, giving residents the freedom to pursue personal interests, meet individual learning needs, and shape their own professional journey. Whether it's sports medicine, palliative care, urgent care, or something entirely new, our electives offer space to explore, refine, and grow.

Built-In Flexibility Across All Three Years

  • Block 5 Elective: All residents have 4 weeks of elective time during the December–January holiday season.
  • Additional Elective Time: R2s & R3s receive 3 weeks of elective time in both the first and second halves of the academic year.

Continuity of Care During Electives

To maintain strong patient relationships, our elective structure balances flexibility with continuity:

  • R2s maintain two half-days of clinic per week during the first half of the year and four half-days of clinic per week during the second half; exceptions may apply for R2s on specific Tracks.
  • R3s may be granted greater flexibility, including away electives without clinic, pending program director approval.
  • Block 5: Residents typically have 6–8 half-days of clinic over the four weeks.

Design Your Own Elective

Many residents choose to customize their elective experiences—and some have even successfully created away electives that align with their passions and career goals. Residents are encouraged to dream big and design their own path. Our faculty are here to support and guide them every step of the way.

Pre-Approved Electives

To make planning seamless, we offer a growing list of electives that are ready to go or easily adaptable:

  • Family Medicine Residency Clinic (FMRC): Includes residency clinic, specialty clinics, and precepting
  • Outpatient Internal Medicine
  • MSK/Sports Medicine
  • Labor & Delivery
  • Palliative Care & Geriatrics
  • Urgent Care
